Dive travel wholesaler Deep Blue Adventures is teaming up with equipment manufacturer Aqua Lung and several local Ohio dive retailers early next month to host Dive Hope, an event held annually at Whitestar Quarry in Gibsonburg, Ohio, which happens to be close to the company’s headquarters and where Deep Blue’s owner and family frequently dive.
The event is being held Saturday August 2nd from 10am – 4pm Eastern Time. It is only $10 to participate in the Dive Hope dive and 100% of all proceeds raised that day by the various activities go to a designated cancer organization or charity. This year’s recipient is the Breast Cancer Fund of Ohio. Attendees not only get to spend the day diving, but can also participate in a silent auction, raffle tickets with door prizes, a Bar-B-Q lunch, underwater treasure hunt and more.
Over the past five years, divers and industry professionals participating in the Dive Hope day in Ohio (previously known as Finding The Cure) have raised thousands of dollars to help the cause. The overwhelming support received from local divers has spurred Aqua Lung's Brian Miller and the local dive businesses involved to continue what has now become an annual event that has grown year after year. Over the previous 4 years, well over $20,000 has been raised and stands as an incredible testimony to the power of what a group of local divers coming together for a great cause can do against a disease that kills more that 8 million people each year.
Prizes include thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment from Aqua Lung, as well as more scuba equipment, dive classes, travel and other goodies donated by the participating dive stores: Aqua Hut, New Wave Scuba, Columbus Scuba, SODA, PADI Course Director Patrix’s Scuba and many others. Make sure you bring your check books as these items include D6i Computers, Legend LX and other regulators. Those who are looking to participate and not wanting to spend a lot of money will be able to find bags, MFS, dive lights and other smaller options.
Deep Blue Adventures has arranged travel prizes valued at up to $2500 each in value to be provided by some of the world's premier destinations. These sponsors include Buddy Dive Resort in Bonaire [One week Hotel and Dive package], Atlantis Dive Resorts in the Philippines [One week all-inclusive hotel and dive package], Aggressor [One week liveaboard vacation in Bahamas] and Laguna Beach Resort in Utila [One week all-inclusive hotel and dive package].
As the event continues to grow, there are also two new and noteworthy additions this year:
Dive Hope will kick off with a sinking of a memorial in the Quarry at 8am on Saturday morning. Spearheaded by Columbus Scuba and volunteers, a plaque was created to commemorate the event and will become a new permanent underwater feature for divers to visit.
Also contributing to the weekend’s event, Silent Diving’s President Mike Fowler will be conducting rebreather tryouts at the quarry the following morning. If you aren't one of the fortunate few to grab a spot for Sunday's tryout, Mike will be there Saturday showcasing one of his premier rigs and can answer any questions you might have. Pre-registration is required for the Sunday rebreather dive and 100% of the nominal fee of $25 per participant is being donated to Dive Hope.
Along with the chance to swim away with amazing prizes, the event provides the opportunity for divers to gather from all over the region, meet new buddies, spend a fun day diving in their backyard, challenge their skills, and at the same time contribute to an incredibly great cause while spending time doing something they love.
If you plan to participate in the Dive Hope event, you are asked to consider pre-registering online. This website also provides directions to the quarry. Any divers who cannot make it to Ohio that weekend, but would still like to contribute, can do so by registering and paying for tickets through the same site even if they cannot go.
As another option, as in previous years, Deep Blue Adventures has had out-of-state clients call and ask to purchase raffle tickets by phone as a way to contribute. One year, one of these clients won a piece of Suunto equipment which was promptly shipped to her. Should anyone wish to do the same, Deep Blue Adventures’ CEO Cheryl Patterson is again offering this option to everyone.
More information on the event or to register for the rebreather tryout on Sunday August 3rd, contact Cheryl Patterson at Cheryl@DeepBlueAdventures.
